It was upon a winter's night
Two thousand years ago
When shepherds saw a wondrous sight
An angel told them, 'Lo!
Glad tidings', was the angel's cry,
'That all the world might know.'
'For unto you is born this night
In David's city, there
A saviour who is God's delight
Within a stable bare'
In Bethlehem town a wondrous sight
As ox and asses stare.
A sign was told they should employ
That they should find the place,
There they beheld a maiden's joy
And saw the new-born's face.
In swaddling bands, the infant boy
Was in a manger laid.
The heavenly host burst forth that night
Praised God from heaven sent.
'Glory to God and, what delight,
Peace and goodwill to men!'
Then having seen that wondrous sight
To share the news they went.
Soon wise men found Jerusalem
To see the child, they thought.
But then the star went on again
Unto the place they sought.
Those wise men's gifts were but a sign
Of what the bible taught.
When angels visit men, we learn
To listen and obey.
When wise men offer special gifts
We too should learn to pay;
But not with gold or earthly goods
But hearts set for His Day.
