I know not why the Lord should come,
He Who rules time and space,
Or why God's well-beloved Son
Should to me show His Grace.
I know not why the Lord does love
A sinner such as I;
But this I know, from heaven above,
He'll lift me to the sky.
I know not why the form of man
He took that we might live.
But so a new-born life began
For those their hearts would give.
I know not why upon that cross
He died in awful shame
That we might count the world but loss
And glorify His name.
For now let me thus worthy be
To shout His blessed name;
That sinners might His Glory see
And spread abroad His fame.
All I can do is sing His praise
And on His mercy call;
Repeating throughout endless days
His love for one and all.
