I know not why the Lord should come,
He Who rules time and space,
Or why God's well-beloved Son
Should to me show His Grace.
I know not why the Lord does love
A sinner such as I;
But this I know, from heaven above,
He'll lift me to the sky.
I know not why the form of man
He took that we might live.
But so a new-born life began
For those their hearts would give.

He died in awful shame
