I knew not that I had a soul
But this I surely know
That as my sins were black as coal
To heav'n I could not go.
Then to my heart the Spirit called
And wakened me to sin
I saw that I was far removed
From Paradise and Him.
It was not for the good in me
For I myself have none
But through my soul He made me see
That I was all undone.
No worldly gain or wisdom shown
Could satisfy the law.
Condemned eternally to groan
In punishment so sore.
But then the Spirit spoke to me
And made the scriptures plain
'Twas then I saw eternity -
His death was but my gain.
'The soul that sinneth, it shall die.'
Those words were plain to see
Were but the Holy Spirit's cry
And writ to set me free.
Repentance soon took hold of me
And grief turned into song.
It was His Love that set me free;
To Him I now belong.
And so I worship you this day
Your Son I do adore,
My soul is glad whene'er I say
I'll love You evermore.
