GREATNESS FOR GOD

Lo! heaven's tremendous, mighty King!
(I tremble at the name!)
Angels but faintly lisp his praise,
Nor half his deeds proclaim.

He rounded all the heavenly orbs,
He bowled them from his hand;
They at his pleasure shoot along,
Or at his bidding stand.

The same unbounded power of God
Poured forth the noisy deep;
Whose billows lash th' affrighted strand,
Or hushed by him they sleep.

O praise his name, ye heavenly orbs,
And sound his fame abroad;
Proclaim his power, thou mighty deep,
And own the hand of God.

PART SECOND.
His fingers spanned the azure sky,
Assigned each star its place;
He smoothed for each a spacious road
Through vast unbounded space.

He gauged the yielding mounds of sand,
That smoothly line the shore;
And curbed th' impetuous, lawless waves,
While all enraged they roar.

Each fragment of the rugged Rock,
In his just scales was weighed,
And all the proud, aspiring hills
Were in his balance tried.

Who led his blest, unerring hand,
Or lent him needful aid,
When on its strong, unshaken base
The ponderous earth was laid?

O praise his name, ye rolling worlds,
And sound his fame abroad;
Ye heirs of heaven, proclaim his power,
That brought you back to God.

PART THIRD.
Who drew creation's wond'rous plan?
Or sketched its prospects out?
Who sat in council when he fixed
The comet's tedious route?

When nature's god-like laws were framed,
Who penned its ruder draught?
Who did the depth of wisdom sound,
Or first him knowledge taught?

Hail, being's uncreated source,
Whose streams from thee all flow?
Cherubic and seraphic bands
In thy dread presence bow.

'O praise his name, ye mighty hosts,
And sound his fame abroad;
Ye ransomed seed proclaim his grace,
That formed your hearts for God.'
